SIU invokes mandate in Blind River

Investigations conducted by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit into serious incidents involving OPP officers, from injuries and deaths to allegations of sexual assault. Many argue that the SIU’s findings often serve to obscure, rather than reveal, police misconduct.

SIU investigates injuries of man in OPP custody in Blind River

Post by Michael Jack »

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the serious injuries suffered by a 54-year-old man while in custody of the OPP in Blind River.

Preliminary information suggests the man was arrested and charged on Oct. 19 following a dispute and taken to the Ontario Provincial Police’s East Algoma detachment, the SIU said.

“The man was held in custody for a bail hearing the following day. On Oct. 20, as the man was being returned to his cell following the bail hearing, there was an interaction with officers in the cell,” an SIU spokesperson said.

The man was transported to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening serious injuries and released back into police custody, the SIU said.

As the SIU has invoked its mandate, the OPP will not be able to provide further information, the OPP said in a news release.
