Two Ontario Provincial Police officers have been cleared of any criminal offence after their arrest of a 20-year-old male charged with impaired driving who was later diagnosed with a fractured ankle last year.
According to a report released Monday by the province’s Special Investigations Unit, the officers spotted a vehicle stopping and turning around to avoid a R.I.D.E. program they were manning in Bath on the evening of Dec. 13, 2024. The officers tracked down the driver in an apartment building, arresting him after a failed breathalyzer test.
The report stated that after the arrest, he resisted being escorted to the officers’ cruiser and possibly rolled his ankle.
Two days after his arrest and charging, the man went to hospital where he was diagnosed with the fracture.
The SIU determined that there was “no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence” in connection to the arrest.
