Man taken to hospital with serious injuries after 'altercation' with officer in November

An Ontario Provincial Police officer has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm in relation to serious injuries sustained by a 40-year-old man in Trenton, Ont., last year.

A Special Investigations Unit (SIU) investigation revealed that on the morning of Nov. 25, 2023, an officer observed a man urinating in front of the CIBC bank on Dundas Street West.

Following this, the SIU says the officer handcuffed the man and "an altercation ensued between the two."

The man was subsequently taken to the hospital with serious injuries, the SIU said in a news release Thursday.

As a result of the investigation, OPP Const. Jeffry Szijarto has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm.

He is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville, Ont., on July 25.

The SIU, an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police that lead to injury, death, the discharge of a firearm at a person or an allegation of sexual assault.

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino has concluded there are reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident on the morning of November 23, 2023.

The SIU investigation found the officer saw the 40-year-old man urinate in front of the CIBC bank on Dundas Street West and when he handcuffed the suspect, there was an interaction between the two.

The man was later taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with serious injuries.

As a result of the SIU investigation, Cst Jeffry Szijarto is charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm.

Cst. Szijarto is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on July 25.

As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has ruled that an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer committed a criminal offence last November in Trenton.

SIU directly Joseph Martino found “reasonable grounds” to believe the officer committed a criminal offence in relation to the serious injuries suffered by a 40-year-old man in Trenton last year.

An SIU media release states that on the morning of Nov. 25, 2023, the officer saw the man urinate in front of the CIBC bank on Dundas Street West.

“The officer handcuffed the man, and there was an interaction between the officer and the man,” the release states.

“The man was later taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with serious injuries.”

As a result of the SIU investigation, Cst. Jeffry Szijarto is charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm contrary to s. 267(b) of the Criminal Code.

This charge has not been proven in court.

Cst. Szijarto is required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at 15 Bridge Street West in Belleville on July 25 at 9 a.m.

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - Ontario’s police watchdog has charged a provincial police officer with assault causing bodily harm following an interaction that left a 40-year-old man with serious injuries last year.

The Special Investigations Unit says the interaction took place after an Ontario Provincial Police officer found the man urinating outside a bank in Trenton, Ont., and handcuffed him last November.

The SIU says the man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

It says the officer is facing one count of assault causing bodily harm.

The officer is set to appear in court on July 25.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit says an OPP officer has been charged after a man was seriously injured during an alleged incident in Trenton late last year.

On Thursday, June 27, 2024, the SIU issued a release, which states director Joseph Martino found reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence in relation to serious injuries a 40-year-old man in Trenton suffered last year.

“The SIU investigation found on the morning of Nov. 25, 2023, the officer saw the man urinate in front of the CIBC bank on Dundas Street West,” reads the release.

“The officer handcuffed the man, and there was an (alleged) interaction between the officer and the man."

“The man was later taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with serious injuries.”

As a result of the SIU investigation, Const. Jeffry Szijarto was charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm, contrary to section 267(b) of the Criminal Code, reported the SIU.

This charge has not been proven in court.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Belleville court on July 25 at 9 a.m.

The SIU is described as an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person, it states online.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the director of the SIU must:

Consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation.

Depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid.

Publicly report the results of its investigations.
