SIU investigation determines no criminal offence after a man’s arrest and injury in Kingsville

Investigations conducted by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit into serious incidents involving OPP officers, from injuries and deaths to allegations of sexual assault. Many argue that the SIU’s findings often serve to obscure, rather than reveal, police misconduct.

SIU investigation determines no criminal offence after a man’s arrest and injury in Kingsville

Post by Michael Jack »

After an OPP officer in Kingsville used force to arrest a man which resulted in injury, SIU has determined the officer used reasonable force.

The incident occurred on April 17, 2025, when the officer allegedly observed a prohibited driver enter a parking lot.

The officer decided to arrest the 26-year-old driver and asked him to step out of the vehicle.

According to police, the man put up a struggle when the officer attempted to bring the man’s arms behind his back.

Additional officers helped put the man into custody, but he was left with a severely fractured right ankle after examination at hospital, officials say.

SIU Director Joseph Martino has determined there are no reasonable grounds the officer committed a criminal offence in regard to the man’s arrest and injury.

Kingsville OPP cleared after suspect breaks his ankle

Post by Michael Jack »

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit has ruled there are no reasonable grounds to charge an Ontario Provincial Police officer after an arrest in Kingsville in April.

The officer watched as a prohibited driver drove into a parking lot and decided to arrest him.

During the arrest, the man broke free, and a struggle ensued.

More officers arrived on scene to help make the arrest, and the suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a severely fractured ankle.

SIU Director Joseph Martino stated that there was no evidence to suggest the officer had committed a criminal offence.

The SIU is called in whenever police are involved in an interaction with the public that results in injury, sexual assault, or death.
