OPP officer accused of exploiting position of authority, court documents show

More details have come to light about charges against a Lambton OPP officer.

Craig Johnson was charged Nov. 28, 2018, with breach of trust and obstructing justice following after an internal probe.

Court documents allege Johnson told a witness to give a false statement to police in September 2017. He’s also accused in the documents of improperly accessing a police database, advising that evidence be destroyed and exploiting his position of authority over an exchange student during the summer of 2017.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

Johnson, a 10-year veteran, is suspended with pay.

Ontario is the only province in Canada that doesn’t allow police chiefs to suspend officers without pay.

Johnson’s case was spoken Jan. 7 in Sarnia court. The case returns to court Feb. 4.
