OPP officer faces assault charges

A 14-year veteran of the OPP and Dufferin County resident has been charged with two counts of assault.

Following an investigation by the OPP professional standards bureau, Provincial Constable Mario Iusi was charged on Tuesday (Jan. 5).

“We hold our members accountable for their actions both on duty and off-duty,” said Central Region OPP spokesperson Sgt. Peter Leon. “Transparency and accountability are very important.”

According to police, the charges laid against the Amaranth resident relate to allegations stemming from an off-duty incident in the Town of New Tecumseth last November.

The charges have not been proven in court. The accused is scheduled to answer the allegations in a Bradford courtroom on Feb. 11.

Iusi has worked for the OPP for 14 years. He is currently a member of Dufferin OPP.

Since the incident occurred off-duty, Leon said Iusi hasn’t been suspended. He has been reassigned to administrative duties pending the result of the upcoming court case.

“Until further notice, that is where he will be working and in that reassigned capacity,” Leon said. “He was, and still is, a member of the Dufferin OPP detachment.”
