Tax increase in McDougall for 2015

Obscenely high and unsustainable policing costs. OPP bills are destroying communities its officers are supposed to protect. Apparent self-interest is cloaked in the guise of public safety needs. Where is the political outrage while OPP costs continue to climb? Who is going to bring policing costs in this province under control?

Tax increase in McDougall for 2015

McDOUGALL TWP. - Up, up, up - and away?

Taxes are increasing for another township within the West Parry Sound District.

The new OPP billing model is hitting municipalities in the district hard as most are having to raise taxes to account for the 2 per cent OPP increase.

Earlier this week, Seguin passed a 2.5 per cent tax increase in principal and a recent article published in the North Star commented on how Whitestone is taking the OPP increase. The answer? Not well.

The new costs project a 329 per cent increase for the municipality which would mean a 4 per cent tax increase if the taxpayers were to absorb the entire OPP costs for 2015, said mayor Chris Armstrong. Fortunately for taxpayers, the municipality won't be able to do so; however, that could mean a reduction in capital projects.

At a special budget meeting on Wednesday evening in the McDougall council chambers, the township could see anywhere from a 3.2 per cent tax increase to a 3.8 per cent tax increase.

The budget will be discussed at council's March 4 meeting.
