Issues with Police Billing Model

Obscenely high and unsustainable policing costs. OPP bills are destroying communities its officers are supposed to protect. Apparent self-interest is cloaked in the guise of public safety needs. Where is the political outrage while OPP costs continue to climb? Who is going to bring policing costs in this province under control?

Issues with Police Billing Model

One Board member wants to meet with the Minister in charge of the OPP.

A member of the Orillia Police Services Board wants to see the province to do something about the way municipalities are being billed for the OPP.

The Board agreed to send a letter to the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

Ralph Cipolla brought up the issue at Tuesday's meeting when they received a letter from an AMO steering committee on OPP billing reform.

Cipolla says the issue he has is that there are too many people in upper management and they are the ones driving up the cost of policing.

He says the front-line officers and staff are bearing the brunt of the criticism but it is really upper management that should shoulder the blame.

Cipolla says Orillia residents can't afford the cost of policing two to three years down the road.

He says the cost of the OPP will take up to 50 per cent of a municipality's budget and that is not sustainable.

Cipolla says it would be nice to sit down with Minister Yasir Naqvi and discuss their concerns as it is better to meet with him face-to-face.

He says the minister understands the challenges facing small municipalities.

Cipolla says if nobody complains about it, nothing is going to be done.

He cites the live fingerprint scanning that has not been implemented in Orillia but will now be getting one after some prodding on the board's part.
