Bluewater Protests OPP Costs

Obscenely high and unsustainable policing costs. OPP bills are destroying communities its officers are supposed to protect. Apparent self-interest is cloaked in the guise of public safety needs. Where is the political outrage while OPP costs continue to climb? Who is going to bring policing costs in this province under control?

Bluewater Protests OPP Costs

Bluewater council has unanimously approved a motion asking staff to prepare a letter to Ontario’s Premier asking her to scrap the new OPP billing formula.

Administrator Steve McAuley pointed out at last night’s meeting the proposed new model is based on the number of homes in the municipality, and considers all of the seasonal homes to be permanent homes.

McAuley says the result is that Bluewater will pay about 1.9 million dollars for policing in 2015, compared to less than 740-thousand last year, or an increase of around 1.2 million dollars.

The average cost per household is estimated to be around 369 dollars under the new formula compared to the current 140 dollars. McAuley says that will amount to a tax increase of twenty per cent just for policing costs.
