The province's police watchdog is investigating after a crash between a police cruiser and a pickup truck sent two people to hospital with serious injuries.

OPP officer, truck driver seriously injured in head-on collision near Caledonia

An Ontario Provincial Police officer and another driver have both been taken to hospital after a pickup truck and a police cruiser collided near Caledonia.

It happened at around 5:22 p.m. on Haldimand Road 9, between York Road and 5th Line, southeast of Caledonia.

The pickup truck and the cruiser collided head-on, with the truck then rolling on top of the cruiser, OPP said.

The male officer was trapped and had to be extricated by firefighters, police said. He was eventually transported to Hamilton General Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck was transported to hospital and arrested on suspicion of impaired driving, OPP said.

The province's Special Investigations Unit will be looking into the collision. The SIU is an arm's length agency called in to investigate whenever police are involved in a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual asault.

OPP officer and civilian seriously hurt in head-on crash in Haldimand County

An Ontario Provincial Police officer and the driver of a pickup truck were seriously hurt in a head-on crash south of Caledonia Tuesday evening.

Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, is investigating the crash between a Haldimand County OPP cruiser and a pickup truck on Haldimand Road 9 near York Road, just before 5:30 p.m. Nov. 17.

The OPP officer and the 30-year-old man driving the other vehicle were taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries, the SIU said in a release Wednesday morning.

OPP would only say the driver of the pickup sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital in Hamilton.

OPP said they could not provide additional comment because the SIU is investigating.

No details about what may have caused the crash have been released.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police in Ontario where someone is seriously hurt, killed or there is an allegation of sexual assault. Two investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned.

Haldimand Road 9 was closed between 5th Line and York Road for the investigation.
