Police watchdog investigating man's death after Kenora arrest

The province’s police watchdog is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a 35-year-old man in Kenora last week.

At approximately 11:15 p.m. June 10, Ontario Provincial Police officers with the Kenora detachment responded to a business on Park Street for a break and enter call, the Special Investigations Unit said in a news release.

Inside the business, officers located the man and arrested him, the SIU said.

After the arrest, he was transported to a hospital in Kenora for treatment, and then airlifted to a hospital in Winnipeg where he died on June 15.

The SIU haven’t yet said what occurred during the arrest or what the man’s condition or injuries were.

The watchdog hasn’t yet released the man’s name.

The SIU assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator to the death.

At this time, the SIU have designated one subject OPP officer and five witness OPP officers.

The post-mortem examination was held in Winnipeg June 17, 2019.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Under the provincial Police Services Act, the director of the SIU must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid.

The director then must report the results of any investigations to the province’s Attorney General.
