Original 1 a.m. release - OPP cruiser stolen

MATHESON - On Saturday March 21, 2015, the South Porcupine Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) located in Matheson, Ontario, discovered that one of their cruisers was unaccounted for.

As a result of an immediate and ongoing investigation, the OPP has been able to confirm that this fully marked 2011 Ford Crown Victoria, black and white coloured cruiser‎, with Ontario licence plate BKYA 833 has been stolen.

The cruiser is equipped with a full roof lighting system and the fleet number 4-428 is clearly marked -on the white driver's and passenger's front doors beneath the letters O.P.P.

The identity of the person responsible for this ‎theft is not known and the investigation is continuing.

11:30 a.m. update

On Saturday March 21, 2015, the South Porcupine Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) located in Matheson, Ontario, discovered an OPP vehicle was unaccounted for.

The ongoing investigation into the theft of the fully marked OPP cruiser concluded shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2015 after the cruiser was observed by OPP officers and strategically followed to a location just west of Matheson.

The officers utilized a spike belt device which aided in safely slowing and stopping the cruiser.

As a result, Travis Plant, 20, of Black River-Matheson Township was arrested and charged with:

• Break, enter a place as per section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC);
• Theft over $5,000 of a motor vehicle as per section 334(a) of the CC;
• Theft under $5,000 as per section 334(b) of the CC (2 counts);
• Resist peace officer as per section 129(a) of the CC; and with
• Driving while under suspension as per section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

He is being held in custody pending a court appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Timmins on Monday, March 23, 2015 at 9:30 a.m.

Man charged with alleged theft of black-and-white OPP cruiser
The OPP has found its stolen police cruiser.

The South Porcupine detachment in Matheson realized on Saturday that one of its black-and-white Ford Crown Victoria squad cars was missing.

Police say they spotted the cruiser around 3:30 a.m. Sunday and began following it.

They set up a spike belt that the police car drove over and then came to a stop.

A 30-year-old man from Black River-Matheson Township has been charged with several counts including theft, break and enter, resisting an officer and driving while suspended.

He is set to appear in court Monday.

The charges have not been proven in court.

Stolen Cop Car Found; Matheson man arrested

The Ontario Provincial Police utilized a spike belt to stop a thief who stole a police cruiser from the South Porcupine OPP Detachment in Matheson.

Around 3:30 a.m. the stolen cruiser was located and followed by police to a location just west of Matheson.
