Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into the circumstances surrounding the apprehension of a suspect following a traffic stop in the Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls shortly after 12 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4.
The 48-year-old-man sustained injuries to his shoulder and neck during the arrest which required surgery at Lake of the Woods District Hospital.
According to a news released issued by the SIU, preliminary information provided by Kenora detachment OPP relates that an OPP K-9 officer stopped the vehicle approximately two kilometres north of Gibi Lake on Highway 71.
Upon speaking with the male driver, the officer detected an odour of marihuana emanating from inside the vehicle. The officer attempted to arrest the 48-year-old man.
As the officer continued with a drug related investigation, the male sustained an injury and was transported to the hospital for treatment.The SIU has assigned two investigators and one forensic investigator as part of the investigation. The SIU urges any witnesses of the incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid.
