Postby Thomas » Sun Dec 24, 2017 4:50 pm

An Ontario Provincial Police officer from the North Bay Detachment was involved in a collision with a passenger vehicle Friday at 5:15 p.m. on Highway 17 in Bonfield Township.

At the time of the collision, the officer was responding to another occurrence, according to OPP.

The OPP has notified the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which has invoked its mandate.

As a result, the OPP said it will not be able to provide any further information.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation.

Depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid or report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
