OPP cruiser stolen, recovered by police after highway chase

Postby Thomas » Sat Jan 09, 2016 4:55 am

An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) vehicle was stolen and recovered in Mississauga Friday night and police are looking into two possibly related crime scenes in Peel Region, Sgt. Kerry Schmidt has confirmed.

Schmidt told reporters that at around 7:30 p.m., police tried to pull over a vehicle that was being driven erratically and apparently speeding on Highway 407 near Highway 410.

"[Police] attempted to stop it and it did not obey ... and they went after this vehicle and the suspect vehicle was then involved in a collision [on] the 410 on the ramp to the [eastbound] 407," Schmidt said.

"The vehicle was travelling originally on the 407 but turned to go the wrong way on an off-ramp," he said, adding that vehicle was subsequently involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle.

"There were several occupants, including possibly a child there, as well," Schmidt said of the vehicle that was hit. "They have been taken to hospital."

Peel paramedics confirmed late Friday that three people were taken to area hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The ages and genders of the patients could not immediately be confirmed.

The male suspect then fled on foot and apparently stole an OPP cruiser after the crash, according to police.

The OPP used their Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate the vehicle, according to Schmidt. The OPP cruiser was subsequently found at a condominium parking lot on Eglinton Avenue northwest of Winston Churchill Boulevard in Mississauga.

Schmidt told reporters that police believe the person who allegedly stole the OPP car was also involved in the head-on collision.

Multiple police units, including the canine unit, were spotted at the scene where the car was abandoned.

Officers were still looking for the suspect late Friday.

Search on for suspects after police cruiser stolen

Postby Thomas » Sat Jan 09, 2016 4:56 am

Police are currently searching for at least one suspect after an Ontario Provincial Police cruiser was stolen following a head-on crash.

According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the events began around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 407 when police spotted a vehicle driving erratically.

A pursuit began after the vehicle failed to stop for police, he said.

The vehicle subsequently collided head on with a second vehicle after driving the wrong way onto the southbound Highway 410 ramp to the eastbound Highway 407.

Following the crash, at least one suspect who fled the scene was then somehow able to steal a police cruiser.

“Obviously, if we get a head-on crash right in front of us we’re going to get out (of our vehicles) and respond immediately,” Schmidt said.

“I don’t know what happened at that scene, but absolutely this is not something that happens very often,” he said of the cruiser being stolen.

Using the vehicle’s global positioning system, police were able to locate the stolen cruiser abandoned near Winston Churchill Boulevard and Eglinton Avenue in Mississauga.

According to paramedics, three people are currently in hospital in serious condition as a result of the initial crash.

Details on the genders and ages of the patients were not immediately provided.

The Highway 410 ramp to the eastbound Highway 407 remains currently closed.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is now investigating.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
