Fatal R.I.D.E. Check Incident Creates SIU Investigation

After Woman Pedestrian's Death Ontario Special Investigations Unit Invokes Mandate
ONTARIO’S SPECIAL INVESTIGATION UNIT (SIU) INVOKES MANDATE
Members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted an R.I.D.E. check at 3:00 a.m. this morning at the intersection of Rose and Arthur Streets in Guelph. While attempting to stop and check a vehicle, the driver failed to stop for officers. Police followed the route of the vehicle a short distance down the road where the vehicle had collided with a female pedestrian and the unknown driver fled the scene.
The female was rushed to an area hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Guelph City Police continue a parallel criminal investigation into the circumstances.
The OPP has notified the province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) which has invoked its mandate. As a result the OPP will not be able to provide any further information.
