Here is a partial list of Canadian police officers killed violently in the line of duty in recent years:

— March 2, 2013: Const. Steve Dery, of the Kativik Regional Police Service, was shot and killed and another officer wounded while responding to a domestic dispute in the remote northern Quebec community of Kuujjuaq. The shooter was found dead inside the home.

— March 8, 2010: Ontario Provincial Police Const. Vu Pham was shot and killed after pulling over a pickup truck near London., Ont. The suspect, Fred Preston, was wounded in a shootout with police and died three days later.

— Dec. 29, 2009: Ottawa Const. Ireneusz (Eric) Czapnik was stabbed to death outside an Ottawa Hospital. A Mountie under suspension was arrested in the attack. In 2012, Kevin Gregson was found guilty of first-degree murder.

— Nov. 5, 2007: RCMP Const. Douglas Allen Scott died from a gunshot wound sustained while responding to a call for assistance involving an impaired driver at Kimmirut, Nunavut.

— Oct. 6, 2007: RCMP Const. John Worden sustained multiple gunshot wounds during a foot pursuit of a fleeing suspect, in Hay River, NWT.

— March 2, 2007: Laval police Det. Sgt. Daniel Tessier was fatally shot during a cocaine-trafficking investigation at a Montreal-area home.

— July 15, 2006: RCMP Const. Robin Cameron was killed in a shootout that happened after officers responded to a family dispute near Spiritwood, Sask. Const. Marc Bourdages died the next day. Const. Michelle Knopp was wounded in the incident.

— July 7, 2006: RCMP Constables Marc Joseph Denis Bourdages and Robin Lynelle Cameron died from gunshot wounds sustained while responding to a domestic dispute call near Mildred, Saskatchewan.

— Dec. 14, 2005: Laval, Que., Const. Valérie Gignac was shot after police responded to a call about an agitated suspect at an apartment building.

— May 5, 2006: Windsor, Ont., Senior Const. John Atkinson was shot and killed during a drug bust.

— March 3, 2005: RCMP Constables Anthony Fitzgerald Orion Gordon, Lionide (Leo) Nicholas Johnston, Brock Warren Myrol and Peter Christopher Schiemann were shot and killed by a deranged suspect near Mayerthorpe, Alta.

— Feb. 28, 2004: RCMP Cpl. James Wilbert Gregson Galloway was shot and killed while assisting the Edmonton Emergency Response Team in Spruce Grove, Alta.

— Feb. 28, 2004: RCMP Cpl. Jim Galloway was shot during a standoff at a home in Spruce Grove, Alta.

— Dec. 21, 2001: RCMP Const. Dennis Strongquill was killed by a motorist who opened fire when police pulled over his vehicle near Russell, Man.

— March 5, 2001: RCMP Const. Jurgen Seewald was shot after responding to a domestic dispute in Cape Dorse Nunavut.

— Dec. 21, 2001: RCMP Const. Dennis Strongquill was killed by a motorist who opened fire when police pulled over his vehicle near Russell, Man.

— June 4, 1980: RCMP A/Const. Dennis Lenard Fraser killed while attempting to stop a suspected impaired driver at Port Alberni, B.C.

23 Ontario police officers have died on duty since 2000

Toronto Const. John Zivcic was the 23rd Ontario police officer to die in the line of duty in the last 13 years when he was struck in a two-car crash on the weekend, according to the Ontario Police Memorial Foundation.

Zivcic, 34, was responding to a call when his cruiser collided with another car at Bloor Street West and Neilson Drive, near Highway 427. The other driver suffered minor injuries. The officer was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital where he died of his injuries on Monday afternoon.

Below is a list of the 23 Ontario officers killed in the past 13 years.

Dec. 2, 2013: Toronto Const. John Zivcic, 32, died after a car crash. The investigation is ongoing.

March 14, 2013: Guelph Const. Jennifer Kovach, 26, died in a car crash. She was driving at more than double the speed limit on an icy road without her seatbelt when she lost control of her cruiser and plowed into a city bus, police concluded.

June 28, 2011: York region Const. Garret Styles, 32, died after being dragged and pinned under a van in East Gwillimbury during a routine traffic stop. The 15-year-old boy who was driving the van became a quadriplegic in the crash and is facing manslaughter charges.

Jan. 12, 2011: Toronto Sgt. Ryan Russell, 35, died trying to stop the driver of a stolen snowplow. Richard Kachkar, 46, was found not criminally responsible earlier this year. In April, the Ontario Review Board ordered that Kachkar be sent to Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences.

March 8, 2010: OPP Const. Vu Pham, 37, was gunned down during a traffic stop in Wingham. Fred Preston, 70, was wounded in the same incident and died days later in hospital.

March 2, 2010: Peel Const. Artem (James) Ochakovsky, 36, was killed in a two-vehicle crash at Airport Road and Steeles Avenue in Brampton. No charges were laid.

Jan. 12, 2010: RCMP Chief Supt. Douglas E. Coates, 57, died in the earthquake that ravaged Haiti. He was a member of a UN peacekeeping mission.

Dec. 29, 2009: Ottawa Const. Ireneusz (Eric) Czapnik, 51, was stabbed while sitting inside his cruiser outside a hospital emergency room. Former RCMP officer Kevin Gregson was found guilty of first-degree murder.

July 6, 2009: OPP Const. Alan Hack, 31, died in a crash near London.

Aug. 2, 2007: York Const. Robert Plunkett, 43, was pinned between two cars during an investigation. Nadeem Jiwa was convicted of manslaughter.

Nov. 13, 2006: OPP Const. David Mounsey, 51, died after crashing his cruiser into a hydro pole in Huron County.

May 14, 2006: Sault. Ste. Marie Const. Donald J.Y. Doucet, 41, was killed in a two-vehicle crash.

May 5, 2006: Windsor Const. John Atkinson, 37, was shot and killed while investigating a drug deal. Nikkolas Brennan was convicted of first-degree murder.

July 20, 2005: OPP Const. Andrew Potts, 29, died after his cruiser collided with a moose near Bracebridge.

Nov. 26, 2004: OPP Const. Michael Siydock, 49, suffered a heart attack while trying to help people who were trapped in a car crash.

May 23, 2004: OPP Const. Tyler Boutilier, 32, died in a two-vehicle crash in the Township of Leeds.

May 15, 2004: Coburg Const. Chris Garrett, 39, was lured to his death while responding to a false robbery call. The man who made the call stabbed him in the neck. Troy Davey was convicted of first-degree murder.

Sept. 20, 2003: OPP Const. John Flagg, 55, was killed during a police chase near Almonte. John Arthur Barry pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death.

May 23, 2003: OPP Const. Philip Shrive, 49, was killed in a crash in Renfrew.

Aug. 21, 2002: South Simcoe Police Const. Alan Kuzmich, 41, was outside his vehicle when he was struck and killed by another driver.

May 7, 2002: Walpole Island First Nations Const. Paul Neudert, 32, died in a crash with another police cruiser.

Feb. 18, 2002: Toronto Const. Laura Ellis, 31, was responding to an emergency call when she was involved in a two-vehicle crash. She was pronounced dead at the scene. No one was charged.

June 9, 2000: OPP Sgt. Margaret Eve, 38, was outside her cruiser when she was hit by another vehicle near Chatham-Kent.
