OPP officer charged in car crash

One OPP officer has been charged after a collision with a civilian car on the way to responding to an armed robbery at a Gananoque jewelry store Friday.

The car crash occurred at the intersection of Stone and King streets and the Gananoque Police Service charged the OPP officer with fail to yield to traffic on a through street, under the Highway Traffic Act.

The two vehicles involved in the incident sustained major damage, but there were no injuries.

The marked OPP car had its sirens and lights on when responding to an armed robbery at Henderick's Quality Jewellery and Expert Repairs, on King Street East, after Gananoque police called the OPP for assistance. The robbery took place at about 5:15 p.m.

“It's a major incident so we just called to have extra bodies around and we were trying to secure perimeters so that we could deploy the canine unit from the OPP,” said Gananoque Police Chief Garry Hull. “The more people that you have available to secure the perimeter, the better chance there is of the dog actually picking up on something.”

The Special Investigations Unit, which conducts criminal investigations into circumstances involving police and civilians, is not looking into the car crash, said Hull, because there were no injuries and the officer was not in pursuit of the robbery suspect.
